Colossians 2:6 basically says that the same
way we received Jesus as Lord is the same way we are to walk out
our life in Him. So, how do we receive salvation through Jesus;
by being good? NOT! This is where America's "good ole boy"
mentality just won't cut it. If we judge ourselves by others around
us, we can always find somebody to compare to who makes us look
"purty shiney." Problem is, the standard of measurement
is by God's calculations --- not man's. According to heaven's
standards, I'm in trouble. God said there's not a good one of
us in the whole litter! (Romans 3:10 Crystal's translation) That's
why Jesus came, to pay the price for our sin and give us the choice
of trusting or not trusting in Him as our Savior. So, basically
put, when I came to Jesus I didn't have anything impressive to
offer Him. I came needing help, needing to be "fixed,"
needing to know I could be loved and forgiven by God, and having
absolutely no means within myself to attain any of it! All I could
do was to submit my life to Jesus and trust Him to be true to
His word. It's wonderful!
So
now that I'm forgiven and cleansed by Jesus --- "saved"
as we call it, my life is now His --- why am I trying so hard
to "become a better person" for Him? Did He not do such
a good work on the cross that now He needs my help? What Jesus
began in me, is He incapable of finishing? "I" must
now "do" something for Him in my own strength to impress
God of my good intentions? Let's
say I've got this horse I'm training on barrels, and the pasture
I keep him in has the barrels set up. Say this horse really wants
to please me by doing good on

barrels.
So, when he's loose, he's out there working on running barrels ---
all by himself. (I know, use your imagination!) When the time comes
and I pull him up to work him, he doesn't listen to me, he does
what he thinks is best, runs the pattern his way and doesn't yield
to pressure on the rein. Will this horse make the kind of barrel
horse I'm looking for? Not in a lifetime! Why? Because he's not

yielding
to my commands. I don't need a horse to work and sweat out in
the field on his own! All I need is for him to do what I ask of
him, when I ask it! He can't become good on his own. To become
good at anything, he must learn to yield to the directions of
his master! Whallah!!
Been running around in your own personal "field" trying
to impress your Master by becoming "good" on your own
for Him? It's a waste of energy. You're working up a sweat for
nothing because you're certainly not impressing God! God doesn't
need our self-motivated, sweaty efforts! He just wants us to yield
to His touch, move according to His leading, and choose to obey
when He asks something of us. Is there work involved? Yes ---
but it's work done from Him, not for Him! The difference is tremendous!
Now
I know where I've spent most of my Christian life --- running
around in circles, working up a sweat in an effort to "please"
God, and hoping He was being impressed with my efforts! I'm tired
now. I think I'll try “resting" in Him --- obeying
what I hear Him say do, and trusting Him for the outcome. Wow,
what a novel idea?! Water hose, anyone?
