A round pen is an amazing thing. Really. Within the confines of its perimeter, the destinies of horses are shaped! An over statement? Yeah, maybe just a little, but its called "poetic license." (I think that means if you tell a lie using lots of flowery words, you can get away with it.) Now, where was I? Oh yeah, ever notice how things change when you put a horse and a man in a round pen together? It's a clash of wills. You can put a bronc of a horse in a round pen and he'll be a little uneasy, but no big deal. Put a man in there with that bronc and you've got instant emotions! Even though the man was alive before that horse was ever born, the horse never gave the man much thought... until now. Now, within the confines of this situation, the horse is forced to consider the man and his relationship to him.

If he's a sure enough bronc, his first reaction will be to run. He'll circle the round pen with his nose to the outside and his rear to the inside, doing his best to find a way out of this "trap" while not choosing to acknowledge the existence of the man standing in the middle of the pen. But he can only run for so long. He doesn't even know it yet, but the man has already begun to direct his movements, turning him at will. One main thing that the man wants the horse to do is to stop running from him and face him. Once the horse does that, he gets to rest. Ahhh, what a wonderful thing rest is! Next thing the horse will find is that the man is not his enemy; he's his friend. And the man isn't trying to take anything away from the horse either... except his rebellion. On the contrary, that horse will never experience his destiny - what he was really made for - unless he submits to the will of the man, because the horse's destiny is locked up in the mind of the man. Only by trusting in and submitting to the man can the
horse ever find his true reason for life.

Once the horse stops running and turns to face the man, he begins to realize that while he keeps his focus on the man as master, he gets to rest. If he loses focus and turns toward other things, he has to run and sweat some more. It doesn't take a horse long at all to find out that the closer he stays to the man, the more rest he experiences

.

Why can't we be this smart? Even though God has existed long before we were ever born, we never gave Him much thought until we find ourselves in a "round pen" situation. Now we are forced to choose whether or not we will have a relationship with this One Who stands in the middle of our existence. Given enough running in circles and turning our butts to Him, we sometimes can begin to get a clue... "I could die doing this!" Duh!!! Stop and face up! Quit running from the Master of your destiny! Turn towards Him, not away from Him, and you'll have peace! Lose your focus and go off after other things and you'll run some more. Turn again to face Him and you'll again find rest. The closer we can stay tuned into Him, the more we will experience rest, peace, and the pathway to whatever it is we were born for!
