I love writing, but I’ve got the vocabulary of a…well…I really don’t have a word for it. That’s the problem; I often find it hard to come out with the RIGHT word to express what I want. I always figured that’s why God gave us hands, right? What we lack in vocabulary, we can make up with hand gestures, body movements, and facial expressions. When I’m doing a church service it’s often frustrating cause I’m thinking something but can’t seem to find the right word for it. At times like that I’ve learned to invite aid from the audience. People are always so gracious to help. Suggested words come up from all over the audience and I can just pick out the one I want. Cool huh. Audience participation….keeps everyone involved and paying attention….works really good. One time during a cowboy church service at a horse fair, I was right in the middle of telling a story when I couldn’t think of the correct word to save my neck. It was frustrating to say the least. I finally said, “You know…the place where planes land.” The audience in one accord yelled out the word “airport” and simultaneously roared with laughter. The story instantly and unintentionally became a funny one.

But with writing it’s different. You can’t see my facial expressions. (That’s a GOOD thing.) And hand gestures are…well…useless. What’s a body to do? Our son Tyger also loves to write…but he has a HUGE vocabulary. (It’s hard to believe he came out of my gene pool.) He uses these awesome words that make what he says sound so…poetic…intelligent…picturesque.

FINALLY, (whether he felt sorry for
me or just embarrassed) Tyger let me
in on one of his little secrets. Shift+F7. Oh yeah! It’s a WONDERFUL thing! OK, it works like this…you come up with a word you see, but it’s not quite the word you’re looking for, so you press the Shift button and the F7
button and “whalah”… instant eloquence! Up come all these other words that are synonyms for the word you typed in. Like fearless…Shift F7…and up come the words…bold,

dauntless, daring, heroic, intrepid. Intrepid…I LIKE that word. It’s a “tough” sounding word. Gosh, I wish I had one of them Shift F7 buttons in my head! That way, every time I am speaking live and I draw a blank, I could just “punch in” and my brain fart would be over! (There are no words in Shift F7 for “brain fart”)

You know, I think God has had that “Shift F7” thing going on all along. What I mean is, I can come to God and be myself.
It may sound stupid or hick or backward to myself and maybe to you, but when my prayer hits God’s ear…it sounds wonderful…extraordinary, marvelous, phenomenal, astounding! (I liked em all) God must filter it through heaven’s “Shift F7 department.” Our prayers, as simple as they may be, are heard from the heart. God hears the language of the heart. Sometimes your heart before Him in silence is speaking volumes. God is not interested in eloquent words…but humble and honest hearts. I’m totally convinced that the richest thing we can attain on this earth is a viable interaction with God. (“viable”…I looked that one up.) A lifestyle where I am confident that He hears me, and I am becoming more and more sensitive in recognizing His voice. To do that, we gotta just be ourselves. God holds great stock in honesty and realness. So, don’t be afraid to approach God as yourself. He’s waiting to hear from you…don’t take a dictionary, just speak from your heart…hand gestures work too.
